Reiki (ray - key) is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
Reiki is based on the idea that "vital life force energy" is within us and around us. If one's life force energy is low or blocked, we are more likely to feel stressed and get sick. If one's life force energy is high and flowing freely, we are more capable of feeling well and being healthy. Reiki is focused on the reestablishment of this free flowing energy.
Reiki is administered by a gentle laying on of hands. The trained practitioner's touch is very light or with hands held above various position on the body, each for several minutes. Reiki is not a massage and the recipient is fully clothed. The Practitioner giving the treatment serves as a channel for energy to flow to the recipient. The recipient is the one who assimilates the energy that goes to where it is needed.
Reiki has been shown to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. The National Institutes for Health defines Reiki as a spirit based energy. It is not religion or dogma. Reiki can be used on its own or in addition to traditional medicine and therapies. Reiki should never be used in place of or instead of traditional medicine and therapy. Reiki does no harm and does not interfere with other medications and treatments.
